Calling all cosplayers~!

Tue Jun 10, 2008, 8:18 PM
Hello Everyone! Boy, do I have news for you~

on the 20th of this month, Crisis Core is released in PAL regions - which means New Zealand! And I thought that there couldn't be a more perfect opportunity for a cosplay meetup! So, dust off those Turk Suits, re-spike your hair and grab your oversized weaponry and lets all meet!

Since the 20th is a Friday (and thus, people generally have school), I'm suggesting that we meet on the Saturday. So, how does Saturday the 21st of June at Borders at 10AM sound to everyone? From there, we'll make our way across to EB Games in Manners Mall so that I can pick up my pre-ordered copy of the game (and the art book~~). Afterwards, we can do lunch and hopefully if everyone lets me, another photoshoot-esque thing ^^

Note: this is in no way restricted to those cosplayers who like/cosplay Final Fantasy.
Anyone and everyone is invited! I'd like to see as many people there as possible!
So, what does everyone think, is this a good idea? comment with ideas ^^

tutorial - Espada shoes

Tue May 20, 2008, 1:24 AM
  • Mood: Longing
  • Watching: MythBusters
  • Playing: FFVI
Okay, this is my first tutorial, so be nice to meh ; ;

This tutorial is an attempt at showing you how to make shoes shown on the left in this image

You will need:
Black boots - ones that go up to your ankles/slightly higher if you can. but depending on which espada your cosplaying, eg: Spoony (Nnoitra) needs elf-boots etc.
paint - I used acrylic, which I would not reccomend because it cracks like there's no tomorow. (I made them last minute, so I couldn't get anything else in time) I would say that fabric paint possibly mixed with acrylic would work well.
masking tape - just any old masking tape is good, as long as it'll stick and won't form bubbles so that the paint doesn't spread to parts you don't want.

Step 1: References
You'll want as many references of the shoes as you can find. the more the better really, because then you can get them really accurate. try to get them to show all angles of the shoe, at least a back view, side view and front view.

Step 2: Masking Tape Stage 1:
the first lines I put on were the lines down the middle of the shoe, on the front and the back. These go from the bottom of the shoe to the tongue. I found a good size was to run a piece of tape down the middle where you want to paint, then two strips either side of that, then pull up the middle one.
Tip: use multiple small strips to stop bubbles forming

Step 3: Painting!
Start painting! Use at least 5 coats of paint (Thinner coats and more are better than less and thicker. Thinner layers of paint will go on smoother, and give a better overall finish.
Paint until you get bored of painting this line, (and have more than 5 layers), or until you think it looks bold enough. after this, peel off the tape and check how the line looks.
at this stage, you can also paint the sole of the shoe (not the actual bottom, but the bit of rubber around the bottom that you can see from the side)

Step 4:
go to step 2, but repeat for all the other lines. I found it easier to do the first two lines on the front of the shoe (left and right) and the back lines at this time, then then circle around the top as shown in these pictures
rinse and repeat!

And thats the basis of how I made my Arrancar Boots for my Ulquiorra Schiffer cosplay~
Leave comments to tell me if this is useful or not, and if you have any other questions ^^

Wellington Cosplay Meet up May 2008 *edit*

  • Mood: Euphoric
  • Watching: Suzumiya Haruhi no yuutsu ep 8
  • Playing: *lusts for moar Cosplay!
  • Eating: Taco!Aizen
  • Drinking: Chai Tea
EDIT: *I'll post more here tomorrow or sometime when I'm less dead*

wow. So dead. So much fun *O* so many awesome cosplays! I have to say a big thank you to everyone who came, we had a total of 31 cosplayers attend this gathering. 31! *glee* Including 4 from Palmerston North O.O I managed to get some good photos of some cosplays (not all which sucks >.< next time we'll plan it out better so we have more time to get everything in properly) and of the photos I've seen from JP, he managed to get a -stunning- photo of the Le Chevalier D'eon cosplayers (one of those awesome one in a million photos that just blow your mind)

so, all in all a huge success! Hurray for Wellington Lower North Island cosplay!

HOKAY. As most of my watchers also watch ~purarokai, this is probably just re-stating, but there is a meet up planned for this weekend.

Sunday the 4th of May, 10AM UNTIL some ungodly hour of the night. Meet at Borders IN COSPLAY ELSE I'LL EAT YOU. The reason for this is I want to get nice photos of everyone's cosplays, with good backgrounds (and brush up on my photography skills ^^;)

For all those who can come, please leave a message here, on this thread on cosplay.com or on ~purarokai's journal with your character & series so that I can research some good backdrops/poses ^^

Hope to see as many of you there as possible!
